How to Perform Salat Tasbih (Simple & Easy Guide)

Perform Salat Tasbih is a special voluntary (sunnah) prayer in Islam. It is known for its unique feature: you repeat a tasbih phrase many times during each unit (rak‘ah) of the prayer. In total, you say it 300 times if you pray 4 rak‘ahs.

This prayer is a beautiful way to remember Allah, ask for forgiveness, and gain rewards.

The Tasbih You Will Recite

During the prayer, you will repeat this phrase:

Subhanallah wal hamdu lillah wa laa ilaha illallahu wallahu akbar

Meaning:
“Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.”

Intention (Niyyah)

Before starting, make a clear intention in your heart.

  • For 4 rak‘ahs:
“I intend to pray four rak‘ahs of Salat Tasbih for the sake of Allah.”
  • For 2 rak‘ahs:
“I intend to pray two rak‘ahs of Salat Tasbih for the sake of Allah.”

You don’t have to say it out loud—just know it in your heart.

Step-by-Step Method (Per Rak‘ah)

The prayer is performed like a normal salah, but you add extra tasbih at certain points.

Here’s how one rak‘ah works:

  1. Start the prayer (Takbir) and read your opening supplication.
  2. Recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another short surah.
  3. Then say the tasbih 15 times.
  4. Go into Ruku‘ (bowing)
    • After the usual ruku‘ dhikr, say tasbih 10 times
  5. Stand up (I‘tidal)
    • Say tasbih 10 times
  6. Go into First Sujud (prostration)
    • Say tasbih 10 times
  7. Sit between the two sujud
    • Say tasbih 10 times
  8. Perform Second Sujud
    • Say tasbih 10 times
  9. Sit briefly before standing up
    • Say tasbih 10 times

That makes 75 tasbihs in one rak‘ah

Repeat the same steps for all remaining rak‘ahs.

After Finishing the Prayer

  • End the prayer with salam (like normal salah).
  • Then make du‘a (supplication). You can:
    • Ask Allah for forgiveness
    • Make personal prayers
    • Send blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him)

When Can You Pray It?

You can pray Salat Tasbih almost anytime, except during times when prayer is not allowed:

  • After Fajr until sunrise
  • After Asr until sunset
  • When the sun is directly overhead

 The best time is usually:

  • At night, when it’s quiet and peaceful
  • Or anytime you feel calm and focused
